5 jobs I wanted to do when I was younger

5 jobs I wanted to do when I was younger

I recently finished my postgraduate degree in Education and I’m in the process of becoming a university lecturer. Never in a million years did I ever want to teach. (But, I seem to be very good at it). Most importantly I think I’m happy with this career choice. I also hope to do some research on the side.

It’s crazy how things change. The other day I was thinking about all the careers that I dreamed of becoming when I was growing up. So, I thought I’d make a list and pick a few to share.

I read a lot of crime books, they were my favourite. I think I must have also watched almost every single episode of CSI and Criminal Minds. I could sit and watch them for hours, I’m still into criminal shows. I also had this forensic kit that I got for my birthday which I absolutely loved. I don’t know what fascinated me to pursue this career, but it really did seem interesting and fun. After talking to careers advisers about this choice and being told ‘It’s nothing like the tv programmes’ I think that really put me off.

I have always loved to write, I wrote a lot of short stories during my teenage years (which I have kept to myself). I still aspire to be a children’s writer one day. I think what put me off this career was my dyslexia, I’m still not very confident with my writing. But hey, I think one of the reasons why I started this blog was to become more confident in my writing.

Tennis is my favourite sport, I still play quite a lot and I am also a coach. This just didn’t work out, but I guess you can play tennis your entire life. I have met some great people playing tennis and I still take part in tournaments as well as coach the little ones.

I think this has been one of my dreams the longest. I wanted a career that was challenging, interesting and made a difference in peoples lives. What put me off nursing was my work experience that I did in a hospital, seeing and talking to nurses what their job involved on a day to day basis I don’t think I could do that, it really wasn’t for me. The work that they do is amazing and they sure are superheroes.

This is so random, but when you have a toy till and ‘play shop’ with your siblings I’m sure we have all been there. I managed to achieve this dream of becoming a shopkeeper whilst working part-time in a shop when I was at university.

What was your dream career growing up?

Growing up I was fascinated with all things to do with Ancient Egypt and the Pharaohs. This meant I really wanted to be an Egyptologist growing up but, I figured that was a very limited career, even though it is probably what I would have truly loved doing.
