If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would that be?

Each year passes by with the blink of an eye. Life happens so fast. We grow. We learn. We learn lessons we wish our younger selves knew.

This week, I asked as many people as I possibly could the question ‘If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would that be?’. And here are my responses.

  1. “Not to be stubborn or selfish when you think you are right. The older people who give you advice do it for you. Therefore, always lower your ego”. – Ayesha. Z
  2. “I would tell my younger self to never give up. If someone is throwing negativity on you, use it as your strength and not your weakness. Don’t be lazy”. – Saima. R
  3. “I wish I told myself to stop caring so much about what other people think”. – Iman. N
  4. “Never give up on someone who gave you the pieces that you were missing to become the best you can possibly be”. – Hasib. S
  5. “Please yourself before you please others. Think about tomorrow and not today. Be true to yourself”. – Kiran. S
  6. “Trust No one”. – Sumeyye. A
  7. “Relax, everything happens at the right time. God has a plan for everyone”. – Fayzah. I
  8. “To dream big and work towards making it a reality, rather than wait until it fades”. – Alia. A
  9. “To be myself and not let anyone’s negativity affect me in any way that I feel like I need to change who I am and how I am. But to take it to and use it to make myself mentally strong. To follow my dreams and not fear the challenges that will come my way”. – Neena. S
  10. “Everything happens for a reason. So, even though I probably would have said don’t get married. I wouldn’t own a house or be with my partner or have a daughter”. – Sam. C
  11. “I would tell my younger self not to be afraid, to embrace being yourself and to know that no matter what, friends and family will always be there”. – Lucy. C
  12. “Put yourself first, you are a priority before anyone else is”. – Rehna. M
  13. “I’d tell my younger self that being thin is really not that important. Focus on your own happiness instead”. – Laura. K
  14. “One of the many advices that I would give my younger self is that do things on time or even as soon as possible. Plan your life ahead by setting one ultimate goal, which you have a passion on. If you do that then you’ll be able to cross all the barriers that come before you and you will reach your goal”. – Ashmy. J
  15. “Put yourself first always”. – Madihah. H
  16. “Embrace your body, don’t feel so self-conscious about it”. – Charlotte. S
  17. “Understanding is your freedom, you owe it to yourself to be able to understand your limits, your freedom and your gifts. Make do with what you have. Start where you are, do what you can. The rest will avalanche into place. You’re gunna turn out so fucking cool kid”. – Zakerahar
  18. “It is okay to be wrong. Don’t stress yourself out over something little that can be resolved the next time round”. – Esma. I
  19. “To stop worrying about things, everything always works out in the end”. – Isabel. S
  20. “Don’t let people take you for granted”. – Faiza. S
  21. “Save and invest”. – Rya. G
  22. “There are many opportunities for you to do in the future, not only one”. – Amarpreet. D
  23. “Be consistent. Being flaky doesn’t just impact your relationships, it impacts your self-esteem and anxiety levels. When you say you’re going to do something or be somewhere, follow through. This also ensures you think twice before committing that doesn’t actually inspire you”. – Sariye
  24. “High school is not real life. There are so many more people to meet and things to do that you can’t imagine”. – Jessica. H
  25. “Don’t worry shit happens, the ultimate sentence I’ve drilled into my head. This is just the beginning, don’t lose hope. Life will be more exciting once you break out the box. Experiences make you stronger and wiser. They become a part of who you are. Continue exploring your deen, don’t stop because the dunya is telling you too. Continue appreciating what you have rather than praying for what you could have. Have courage and be kind. Oh, and don’t bother fitting in, one day you’ll have your own story to tell”. – Mariam. H

The advice that I would tell my younger self is “Don’t take the people you love for granted. Tomorrow is promised to no one”.

I would tell myself to not jump into relationships so soon. I wish I opted for dating rather than a long-distance relationship in my undergraduate degree.
