25 things I’ve learnt 25 years.

WOW, I’m 25. I feel like twenty-five is a weird age. I am no longer considered early twenties. I’m just as close to 30 as I am to 20. I can have a quarter life crisis. A lot of the acquaintances that I went to school and university with seem to have secured jobs, are engaged, are married, have bought their first homes, are pregnant and some are even parents to more than one child. AND ME? I’ve just had pasta for dinner fourth night in a row. When I was younger, I thought I would have my life figured out by the time I was 25. But, here I am googling my way through life. In honour of me turning 25, here are 25 things that I have learned in my twenty five years of being on this earth. Without further ado…

  1. Coffee is everything: Functioning and facing life with a coffee in my hand.
  2. No one really knows what they are doing: Everyone is faking it till they make it and everyone is googling their way through life. Everyone’s lives are filtered. From the things they post to the things they tell you. Everything is an attempt to achieve both happiness and success.
  3. The only thing certain in life is death: You’re going to lose people in your life and you’re going to realise that no matter how much time you spent with them or how much you appreciate them and told them, it will never seem like it was enough.
  4. Take a day as it comes: Take everyday as an opportunity for a fresh start. Don’t think about tomorrow, next week, next month or even next year. Focus on today and right now.
  5. Happiness is internal: If you are not happy with yourself, another person will not change that. You create the joy that fills your life.
  6. Trust: Let people in, and they will surprise you.
  7. Respect everyone: Everyone deserves respect. The easiest way to gain respect? Give it. It’s that simple.
  8. Take care of yourself: Emotionally. Mentally. Physically.
  9. You cannot force anyone to like you: It’s so hard because it’s human nature to want to be accepted and liked but, I’ve really come to accept that no matter what I do, there will always be people who for whatever or no reason, just don’t like me.
  10. Some friends aren’t forever: Honestly, the reality is that forever friends are rare, so you should cherish them while you have them because whether it be circumstantial or due to a falling out, some people just won’t be in your life forever.
  11. Be nice to people: The world needs more of them. There is enough hate in the world.
  12. Always choose love: Because no matter what, love will always wins.
  13. You can’t decide if you hurt someone’s feelings: As Louis C.K said it.. “When a person tells you that you hurt them, you don’t get to decide that you didn’t.”
  14. “No thanks, I don’t want to.” Is a perfectly valid reason not to do something: You don’t need to come up with excuses or reasons if you don’t want to do something. “No.” Is a complete sentence.
  15. You don’t owe anyone an explanation: If someone doesn’t understand the reasoning behind your actions, you do not have to to justify them. It’s really your business, and yours alone.
  16. It’s okay to cry: When things get tough, it’s okay to cry. It will get tough. Cry. Be angry. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to be angry. It is NOT okay to ignore your pain.
  17. Nothing is worse stressing over: Everything works out in the end so stop wasting your energy stressing. I know this is easier said than done, but it’s so so important to remind ourselves that nothing is worth the stress.
  18. You got this: You can handle more than you think you can.
  19. Keep reading books: We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too.
  20. Timing is truly everything: You can want something to be a certain way with everything you have, but if the timing isn’t right, it’s not going to happen.
  21. Don’t be around people who put you down or drain your spirits: You deserve better company. And please, don’t be that person either.
  22. Save: I feel like people spend more than they can afford and say “You only live once!” – Honestly, life can be pretty long. And I’m pretty sure you will need savings at some point in your life.
  23. Having to-do lists everyday is the best motivator: It reminds me how much I have to do and how much I have left to do.
  24. Learn something new everyday: Either by reading, watching, talking or listening.
  25. Happiness: This year, I’ve been thinking quite a lot about the definition of happiness. I’ve come to learn that happiness is found in the first sip of coffee every morning, in listening to music, in the books that I read, in bubble tea, in looking up at the night sky, in the smile of a child, in the conversations with my best friend and in art. In playing tennis, in giving someone I love a very tight hug, in a heart felt “Thank You”, in travelling to beautiful countries, in breakfast dates and in writing.  When one person’s idea of happiness is another person’s idea of stupidity, you begin to realise that happiness is nothing more than a subjective concept – an illusion of truth.
