All The Bright Places – Jennifer Niven

All the bright places, is a beautiful young adult love story about a girl who learns to live from a boy who wants to die.

Theodore Finch suffers from an undiagnosed bipolar disorder. He thinks about suicide every single day and ways he might kill himself. It is Theodore’s first semester back in school since he experienced a long-term black out and he counts the days since he ‘woke up’.

Whereas, Violet Markey is counting down the days till graduation which she can then escape the town of Indiana. Violet is a quiet and a popular girl who has been depressed since her sister Eleanor’s death, that happened in a car accident the previous year in which she survived.

Theodore Finch and Violet Markey meet on top of the school bell tower; however, it is not clear who is trying to save whom from jumping at the beginning of the book. This becomes clear as you read further into the story.

Violet is looking for a reason to live whereas, Finch is looking for a reason not to die. As they both pair up for a school project to explore the “Natural wonders” of Indiana. The project results taking road trips which brings them closer and they both begin to rediscover themselves. Finch is obsessed with death but for Ultraviolet as he calls her, he finds reasons to live.

All the bright places, is an honest book about grief and mental health. It comes with the message of how important life is and doing things before it might be too late and finally, it shows that the thoughts of “what could have been” can destroy someone. It also shows the impact it has on not only the person experiencing it but those around them.

I think this is one of those books that stays with you for a very long time after reading it, because the characters and the story line have touched you throughout and you can not forget them.

This book is hard to put down, my heart was in pieces after finishing reading this book.
